TOEFL Essentials
Each test is uniquely designed therefore, it is crucial for the test taker to analyze and choose the format with attributes best suited to showcase their individual requisites.
About the exam
TOEFL test is conducted across 4 main sections to accurately assess your English proficiency and command over the language. You will be performing tasks in combination of the following core skills Reading Listening Speaking Writing The TOEFL iBT® and Home Edition run over a span of 3 hours with a 10-minute break after the first two sections, whereas the TOEFL Essentials is a faster paced adaptive testing method lasting about 1.5 hours with no break. Here is a brief review of what can be expected in each section respectively.
TOEFL Reading
Under this section there are 3-4 passages, approximately 700 words long, which introduce a topic or discipline from university level textbooks that are required to be answered. The question format can be Multiple choice Inserting a sentence in the correct space in a paragraph Sorting information into a chart or summary table The time limit to complete this section is about 50-70 minutes, depending on the number of questions.
TOEFL Listening
This section requires you to listen to 4-6 audio clips and answer questions after each clip. The topic of these audio clips will be in relation to your academic environment such as Classroom lectures Conversation between two students Conversation between a student and a teacher This section varies from 40-60 minutes based on the number of audio clips that get played during the test.
TOEFL Speaking
This comprises of 4 tasks with a mix of independent as well as integrated tasks. Independent speaking tasks require you to share your own ideas and perceptions while responding. Whereas, Integrated speaking tasks require you to make use of multiple skills such as Read, listen and then respond Listen and respond It usually takes about 20 minutes to complete this section.
TOEFL Writing
Similar to the Speaking section, the Writing section also comprises of Independent and Integrated tasks. Under Independent writing, a topic is provided and you are required to articulate your thoughts and opinions within 30 minutes with a minimum response length of 300 words. The Integrated Writing task comprises of a short audio recording and a short passage required to be read after which you will need to summarize and compare information gathered from both the sources. The advised length of response is about 200 words and is required to be completed within 20 minutes.
TOEFL SCORING
Each section of the TOEFL has a score range of 0-30 and is graded individually. A summation of all 4 sections gives you the final score card, however some institutes require their applicants to meet a minimum criterion for each section as well. Different universities have different requirements, it is best to be fully aware of the minimum score you are required to achieve in order to attend the University of your choice.
How to Register for the TOEFL iBT® Test
The TOEFL iBT® test is administered up to 6 days a week around the world at authorized test centers or at home, giving you plenty of options. Timing is important though, as appointments can fill up quickly! Pick a test date that's at least 2 to 3 months before your earliest deadline. Register approximately 4 months before your desired test date. Note: Walk-in registration at test centers is not permitted.
